Portugal. The Man LIVE at Brooklyn Bowl

Friday night fans of Portugal. The Man packed Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg to enjoy a sold out show. This was our first time seeing Portugal The Man and we were definitely impressed! Though the band has been around for 5+ years now and their most recent release, American Ghetto, is actually their seventh album, it seems the hype only really started building in the last couple years. Like the The Black Keys, one can only imagine how many conversations this band has where people congratulate them on their “second album”, resulting in the band politely correcting the fan or interviewer and then informing them that they’ve actually released many more in their career. Take the hype for what it’s worth. In this case, PTM lived up to it!

The production of the show on Friday was simple, stripped down, and psychedelic. The stage consisted of the five members, each with their respective spaces to rock out in and the light show provided for a welcome trippy musical experience.

Lead singer and guitarist John Gourley stole most of the show with his endearing vocals and great guitar playing. The band paid tribute to many of their obvious 70s rock influences with a set that included covers such as The Beatles “Helter Skelter” and Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes” (penned by David Bowie in 1972). All in all it was a great show and we’re looking forward to seeing them again in the future. For additional photos, thoughts, and setlist check out According 2 G. See below for some photos we took at the show.

SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2012

Marina Abramovic The Artist Is Present

We’re excited to announce we’ll be at Sundance this year to celebrate the premiere of Marina Abromovic The Artist Is Present. The film’s score was mixed by Ooh La La’s very own Theo Aronson at his recording studio in Brooklyn. This amazing score was composed by Nathan Halpern.

The film takes you behind the scenes, as director Matthew Akers follows Marina from concept to the creation of one of her most ambitious performance pieces, which she performed at MoMA during a lifelong retrospective.

This intriguing documentary was quickly picked up by HBO and will be available later this year, but for those of you who will be in Park City for Sundance, you can check it out! For more information on the film visit the Sundance website here: http://filmguide.sundance.org/film/120052/marina_abramovi_the_artist_is_present

RADIOHEAD @ ROSELAND BALLROOM

Radiohead Roseland Ballroom 9/28/11 photo by Hilary Corts

We were lucky enough to attend the first of two surprise shows Radiohead performed at Roseland Ballroom in New York City this week. The band was in town for an appearance on the Colbert Report and rumor has it, they wanted to make the most of their trip and booked these two last minute shows, making many a Radiohead fan’s dreams come true. Why was it such a big deal? The last time we saw them was at Madison Square Garden (20k capacity arena vs. 3k capacity venue).

The show was nothing short of amazing, with Thom Yorke casually joking on stage, while reminding us how good a musician he is…the rest of the band sounded top notch as well. The band were joined by second drummer, Clive Deamer, who contributed seamlessly to the pulsating rhythms of the new material found on The King of Limbs. The band mostly played their new material, but also included in a few vintage gems in their set such as “Subterranean Homesick Alien”. See below for full set list.

For a full breakdown of the evenings activities head over to the New York Times Online to read Nate Chinen’s review. Also, be sure to check out Frank Mojica’s review of the same evening on Consequence of Sound.

Cymbals Eat Guitars’ new album, Lenses Alien, receives an 8.0 out of 10 on Pitchfork.

Produced by “1990s-throwback-indie producer du jour John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile)” (Pitchfork), the record was recorded at both Headgear Recording and Ooh La La’s studio in Brooklyn, NY. Ooh La La’s Theo Aronson lent a hand with some additional engineering on the record.

The band’s new album is available in the US through Barsuk Records and in the UK via Memphis Industries. Fans can purchase the new release from the band’s website: www.cymbalseatguitars.com/. Click the image below to purchase via Amazon.com.
