The Wrecking Crew @ 2012 WXPN Film Festival

We’re proud to be sponsors of an amazing event happening in Philadelphia this weekend: the 2012 WXPN Music Film Festival!

XPN is hosting the first Music Film Festival in Philadelphia’s history and it’s all going down this weekend starting Friday.

Ooh La La Records is specifically sponsoring an amazing film called The Wrecking Crew. The film is a documentary paying homage to the incredible session musicians of the 60s, “responsible for recording more number one singles than The Beatles, and cut classic hit records with Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Sonny and Cher, Frank Sinatra, and the Monkees among many others.”

Record Store Day 2012

Record Store Day 2012

Hard to imagine that Record Store Day is just around the corner again, just a few days away. We’ve had so many great experiences on Record Store Day over the years, and this year seems as though it won’t be lacking at all either. There are many great events happening all over the world, many of which in the greater New York City area. A few notable things would be Mates Of State playing at set at Sound Fix in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, The Great Book Of John playing at Jack’s Music Shoppe in Red Bank, NJ, Portugal. The Man at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ and GWAR and Trampled By Turtles are both playing at Soundgarden in Baltimore, MD (okay that ones not so close, but c’mon, its noteworthy). And you LAers should head over to Origami Vinyl to see The Henry Clay People for your contribution to the celebrated day.  We will be making the rounds on both coasts on this day, so keep an eye out for us!  And as if all of this great live music isn’t enough, there are also TONS of records for sale that are only available on Record Store Day.  Many of these we can’t wait to get our greedy hands on.  We’re excited to hear new music from Beach House, Edward Sharpe, Garbage, Grouplove and The Hives on the 7″s that they have coming, and we’re looking forward adding the New Multitudes Woodie Guthrie tribute 10″ to our collections.  Sheer curiosity alone is leading us to the Mastodon / Feist split 7″ so we can hear what they sound like covering each other, and last but not least we can’t wait to hear Sara Watkins and Fiona Apple cover The Everly Brothers together.  Its no wonder that Record Store Day is easily our favorite holiday.  What are you most excited for?

Reflecting on SXSW 2012

SXSW 2012

Well we are finally recovered from all things SXSW (interactive and music) and settled back in Brooklyn.  We’ve had a moment to reflect on all of the great things that happened in Texas, and wanted to share with you some of our favorite moments.  It was a wacky year, full of A-list hip hop acts, corporate sponsorship, and Bosses (both Bruce & Rick Ross).  Despite all of the madness, it was another great year overall.  Ooh La La bands 1,2,3 and White Arrows, along with good friends Soft Swells all had action-packed weeks in TX, but we wanted to instead focus on bands who we don’t work with, and celebrate everything that caught us by surprise in the best way possible.  Bruce Springsteen’s keynote speech was phenomenal, and we heard that the Jay-Z show was off the hook, but here are the moments that really stuck with us:

Theo’s favorite performances:

1. Band Of Skulls @ Haven
2. Fiona Apple @ Stubb’s
3. Snoop Dogg @ Doritos Jacked Stage
4. Youngblood Hawke @ Maggie Mae’s Rooftop
5. NO @ Buffalo Billiards

AJ’s favorite performances:

1. WATERS @ Beauty Bar
2. Nada Surf @ Red Eyed Fly
3. Kevin Devine @ Lambert’s
4. Built To Spill @ The Belmont
5. We Were Promised Jetpacks @ Red 7

There were also a few other things that took place down there that have made us quite excited for the rest of 2012, but we’re gonna keep our lips sealed for the time being.  Sorry!  Let us know what you felt were the best bands of SXSW 2012.

Avan Lava / “It’s Never Over”

We’ve been keeping a close eye on our friends Avan Lava for a while now and are stoked to spread the word on their new single “It’s Never Over”. The debut single off their forthcoming EP “Flex Fantasy” (coming out 2/21/12) combines elements of electro-pop-R&B with NY Dance/Disco as singer Tom Hennes (“TC”) sings his heart out reaching Mariah Carey levels of silky falsetto.

NYC band AVAN LAVA is singer TC (Tom Hennes) and Producers/Musicians Le Chev (Narcisse, Fischerspooner) and Ian Pai (Blue Man Group, Fischerspooner). Fantastical, absurd, joyous and technical live performances with the help of Musicians/Vocalists/Technicians Andrew Schneider (The Wooster Group), Drew Citron (Stop The Virgens) and Jo Lampert (Prometheus Bound, The Last Goodbye).

Catch the band playing at:

Glasslands Saturday, February 11th with Tony Castles // Bluejay
