HAPPY HALLOWEEN /////// 1,2,3 Misfits EP

1,2,3 (the band) Misfits EP

Happy Halloween! It’s amazing to think it was a little over a year ago that we threw our first CMJ party, met our homies White Arrows, and drank way too much PBR. Well…we still plan to drink way too much tonight, but while we’re partying we’re also going to jam out to these new Misfits covers 1,2,3 just recorded and released on their website 123land.

Nic Snyder and Josh Sickels always emphasized their punk roots when talking about 1,2,3 or their former band, The Takeover UK, but this new EP is living proof of those early influences. Best part is this was mostly recorded live in Nic’s basement. Now THAT is punk! Check out track below or just head over to our friend at Pretty Much Amazing to get the low down.

SXSW Wrap Up

Twin Shadow

It was a long, fun week in Austin, TX this year for SXSW 2011. Mother nature came through with some amazing weather, which made it especially fun to run around, see music, drink Lonestar and stuff ourselves w/ Tex Mex and BBQ. Plagued with some Facebook mobile app issues a few meals didn’t get documented, but for the play by play report check out the Ooh La La Records Facebook page and you’ll get the important stuff.

Highlight of the week is a serious toss up between Twin Shadow (above photo) at Maggie Mae’s and Phantogram (photo below)at Luster Pearl. Both bands put on a great show and had amazing songs for us to get lost in.

1,2,3 got a great mention in the Arts section of the NYTimes: http://nyti.ms/is93qH

They also made Paste magazine’s list of  13 intriguing band names at SXSW: http://bit.ly/erOtWr

Upon our return on Sunday to NYC we were greeted with 34 degree weather, which made it even more apparent how awesome Austin truly is…New York, I love you, but you’re bringing me down. All in all an awesome week of music, friends, food, and drink. Now if we can just catch up on some sleep…ya right!

Hear what we’re seeing, see what we’re eating. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to track our every move in Austin this year. The plan is to photograph each and every meal as we stuff our faces with BBQ, Mexican food, Lonestar beer and titos vodka. I’m getting hungry typing this and I just ate!

Be sure to check out our LA homies, White Arrows, as well as 1,2,3 who are playing no less then seven shows this week! See details below.

Frenchkiss Records Signs 1,2,3

We’re excited to announce 1,2,3 have signed to respected indie label, Frenchkiss Records for the release of their debut full length. The band’s yet to be titled debut will likely be coming out summer 2011. The label is also home to The Dodos, Les Savy Fav, The Antlers, and The Hold Steady.

The band’s signing to Frenchkiss comes almost exactly one year after 1,2,3 entered the studio w/ producer Theo Aronson to record their debut single “Confetti” (and a few other tunes).

Be sure to pick up the limited edition 7 inch of “Confetti” that Theo produced/mixed, which also features the b-side “Can’t Bribe God”. Click on image below to order now:

1,2,3 Confetti

1,2,3

1,2,3 consists of long time friends Nic Snyder (vox, guitar & keys) and Josh Sickels (drums). Originally started as a side project from the power punk outfit The Takeover UK, Snyder found himself increasingly drawn to 1, 2, 3 and the freedom it gave him to express his own musical ambitions.  Snyder grew up inspired by a steady diet of Mercury-era Rod Stewart, Neil Young, Bacharach and his all-time favorite, Roy Orbison, but he was lured into writing his own music by his father. A collector of punk 7’s back in the seventies, his dad was also a piano player in Pittsburgh’s monolithic Iron City Houserockers, probably the biggest band to come out of the Three Rivers area in the 1970/80?s. Surrounded by photos of his dad on stage with Springsteen and B.B. King, Snyder was inevitably influenced by Blues and Motown as well.

Band:
Nic Snyder – vocals, guitar & keys
Josh Sickels – drums

Ooh La La’s Best of SXSW ’10

I’ve spent the better half of this week recovering from another amazing week in Austin for SXSW 2010. Today was the first day I had my full voice back. What was up with so many people loosing their voices the first two days this year? Highlights from this year included reliving the 90s with Stone Temple Pilots on Thursday night and then Rival Schools at the Photofinish Showcase; getting kicked out of hotels at 4am; NOT getting arrested; and seeing my buddies Slang Chickens (Los Angeles, CA) rock out on Saturday at Club Primos for my last concert of the conference. Below is a list of my Top 5 favorite unsigned bands who played SX this year. Below is a brief day by day recap of my week down there and some of the other bands I got to see.

Ooh La La’s Top 5 Unsigned Bands from SXSW 2010

(in no particular order)

1. Bear Hands

2. The Middle East

3. Ten Bears

4. Acrylics

5. Mini Mansions

Recap coming soon…
