What we’re listening to: Jonathan Wilson “Fanfare”

Thanks to our friends at WXPN in Philadelphia for introducing us to this psychedelic new record by musician/producer/songwriter Jonathan Wilson. XPN featured Wilson as their Artist to Watch in November of last year and we’ve been listening to “Fanfare” non-stop over the holidays. Available through Downtown Records, the album features beautiful guitar work combined with catchy melodies and silky harmonies. Recommended tracks: “Cecil Taylor” and “Future Vision” (wait for the guitar solo!)

2 Members of Pussy Riot Released From Prison

The music community can breathe a sigh of relief now that news has broken that Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova have officially been released from Russian prison. It is clear however that their spirit has not been broken as one of the first things Tolokonnikova shouted upon her release was “Russia without Putin!”. We look forward to seeing the bands plan for 2014 following this extravaganza.

Daft Punk – Behind The Helmets

Mixmag took the time to put together this fascinating mini-documentary on the iconic Daft Punk helmets. Incredibly interesting to get a behind-the-scenes look at exactly how much work went into perfecting these masks, and the reasoning behind the project. Check out the short video and witness the helmets’ rise to fame!

The independent label, who’s roster includes Disclosure, Jessie Ware, and Julio Bashmore, recently traveled to California for their first PMR Party in Los Angeles as well as both weekends of Coachella Music Festival. Incredibly fun candid footage as well as a detailed history of it’s path to success combine for an entertaining and informative glimpse into the world of PMR.

Ooh La La Video Artist Series #12

videoartistsseries

For the twelfth installment of our Artist Video Series, director Cassie La Russa recalls a beachy, sun-soaked, day, set to Ace Reporter’s “Arcadia”.

Here’s what Cassie had to say about the video:

My video is purely visual, based on my adaptation of the feeling of Ace Reporters song Arcadia. I wanted the viewer to have a common understanding of a feeling more than a concept. The video represents myself as an artist– my main goal is to make beautiful imagery, more like a moving photo than a story.

Rest In Peace, Lou Reed

A legend passed away this weekend.

That the man behind such songs as “Waiting for the Man” and “Heroin” continued to produce work to the ripe age of 71 is almost as surprising as his abrupt passing. We’re big fans at Ooh La La and we’ve been both celebrating his life and mourning his death since we heard the news.

Unlike many of the young rock n’ roll legends who died young, Lou met his full potential and yet never ceased to experiment with new ideas, collaborations and mediums.

To say that his work with The Velvet Underground was influential would be a massive understatement. Lou was one of the pillars of what underground music has become, a veritable master of rock & roll.

You’ll be missed, Mr. Lou Reed.

What We’re Listening To: Cut Copy

We here at Ooh La La not only love bringing you the newest and best that the music world has to offer, but we also love it when other great labels do the same.  The fine people over at Loma Vista and Modular posted a new Cut Copy song yesterday, off their new album Free Your Mind, which comes out on November 5th, and we’re pretty excited.  This song is great, the video for the first single is great, and the rest of the album is just awesome.  Check both out for yourself:

I could try to describe the record, but maybe our friends at Flea Marketing said it best:

“You could call Cut Copy an electronica (even indietronica) band, and you’d be right. But you’d also be right if you called them Synth-pop (think Human League), new-wave (think Simple Minds) or even a neo-disco-downbeat-dance-explosion (think…well, nothing, because I just made that up). But you get the idea. It’s a blissfully catchy dance-making album full of enormous hooks and rabbit holes to fall down and get lost in. All-over-the-place can go horribly wrong. It didn’t here. It went fantastically right.”

We’ll be sure to keep you posted on all of the other great music that we stumbled upon too late to sign, but are happy to enjoy regardless!
