SXSW MMXI

Hear what we’re seeing, see what we’re eating. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to track our every move in Austin this year. The plan is to photograph each and every meal as we stuff our faces with BBQ, Mexican food, Lonestar beer and titos vodka. I’m getting hungry typing this and I just ate!

Be sure to check out our LA homies, White Arrows, as well as 1,2,3 who are playing no less then seven shows this week! See details below.

What are we most excited for (besides food)? Cantora Records showcase on Thursday, March 17th! Our friends at Cantora know how to party and have some great bands lined up for the evening. Come by the Victorian room at the Driskill Thursday 7pm-2am. Details on flyer below.

IT’S aLIVE! oohlalarecordings.com Version 2.0 is officially up and running and we have our friends at Free Fall Media to thank for this. This is the start of a new chapter for Ooh La La. With the new site launch we’re planning to post news more frequently and also give you lots more fun content to waste your day and burn your eyeballs out with. In the meantime, surf around and check out the new sections, like the Studio page or the specific artist pages where you can learn about each of our releases and the masterminds behind them. ROCK!

THE LAST ROYALS GET WILD

One of our favorite new blogs out there right now is The Wild Honey Pie. The Last Royals were invited to have a play date with WHP. The kids met at Washington Square Park and had a ball. Get the full story here: http://www.thewildhoneypie.com/thelastroyals/

Unbelievable Cover

The Last Royals have been messing around in the studio finishing up their album and decided to track a few covers for fun. The first one they’ve posted is a 90s classic. EMF’s “Unbelievable”. Remember that one? Below is soundcloud link to check out what this 90s classic sounds like once passed through the prism of The Last Royals. If you like what you hear use the widget below to download the track.

Last, but not least, we’re getting ready to announce a new single from an amazing new band. Keep checking back this month and next for updates. Could be any minute now….

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Get out the eggnog and champagne…it’s about that time to toast to what will surely be another year of great music. Let’s take a quick trip through the events/releases of 2010:

It’s been a great first year for Ooh La La Records. Theo produced a great single for 1,2,3 which became our first release, kicking off 2010 with a BANG! The band soon after caught the attention of UK taste maker label, Chess Club and then Frenchkiss Records in the US and were quickly picked up to do their full length with FKr. If you’re behind on your 1,2,3, be sure to pick up a copy of the limited edition, debut single, “Confetti” in our online store.

Next, we signed The Last Royals whose debut EP came out last month right before Thanksgiving. The Last Royals have been getting a great response on the EP and are going to be finishing up their album in January, then hitting the road end of January into February. Keep an eye out for the band passing through your town in 2011.

Ooh La La threw it’s first CMJ party in October at The Cove in Williamsburg. What started as a last minute party turned out to be a huge success. Tons of friends came out to enjoy sets from bands like White Arrows, The Last Royals, and Lavalier who all put on killer shows.

Lots more fun music on deck for 2011 that we’re really excited about, but can’t announce yet….shhhhhh!

Happy Holidays to all from Ooh La La! See you in 2011…

Top 10 Albums from 2010

We decided entirely based on peer pressure that we should put together a list of Ooh La La’s Top 10 albums from 2010. “Everybody’s doing it”, so we figured we would too. Check out the list below of our Top 10 Albums from 2010 (in no particular order):

1. Tame Impala – Innerspeaker
2. Cee Lo Greene – The Lady Killer
3. Vampire Weekend – Contra
4. Big Boi – Sir Lucious Left Foot…The Son of Chico Dusty
5. Arcade Fire – Suburbs
6. Talib Kweli & Hi Tek Reflection Eternal – Revolutions Per Minute
7. Bear Hands – Burning Bush Supper Club
8. Yeasayer – Odd Blood
9. Neon Trees – Habits
10. Mini Mansions – Mini Mansions

p.s. – image above is from Uncut’s 2008 compilation of bands covering songs by The Faces. It has nothing to do with this list except for the fact that it would have been on this list if it was 2008. We just love the image and wanted to use it!

Twin Flames

I saw The Klaxons for the first time in 2007 when visiting a friend in London right after the band had released their debut album on Polydor. I had never heard of the band before seeing them and remember being immediately impressed by their sound and unique style of songwriting (see video embedded at bottom of post to hear song that made me fall in love with them). The band continues to amaze me with their newest music video for “Twin Flames”, a song from their latest album.

The video, directed by Saam Farahmand, was no doubt inspired in part by the 1989 American horror film, Society. Read more about that in David Wilson’s review of the video.

Check out NME’s exclusive full screen premiere of this wild video.

WARNING: this shit is gross, but I also can’t stop listening/watching it.

-Theo

Dear Polydor,

Why must you insist on including such crappy audio quality in your official YouTube post of this video? This song sounds way better then the low bit rate version your new media department uploaded. Shame on you. For that I am not posting a link to buy the album this song is included on. Let’s be honest, the band probably still hasn’t recouped on this album so it’s not like they’d see any of that money anyway…

DEBUT EP OUT TODAY!
