HAPPY HALLOWEEN /////// 1,2,3 Misfits EP

1,2,3 (the band) Misfits EP

Happy Halloween! It’s amazing to think it was a little over a year ago that we threw our first CMJ party, met our homies White Arrows, and drank way too much PBR. Well…we still plan to drink way too much tonight, but while we’re partying we’re also going to jam out to these new Misfits covers 1,2,3 just recorded and released on their website 123land.

Nic Snyder and Josh Sickels always emphasized their punk roots when talking about 1,2,3 or their former band, The Takeover UK, but this new EP is living proof of those early influences. Best part is this was mostly recorded live in Nic’s basement. Now THAT is punk! Check out track below or just head over to our friend at Pretty Much Amazing to get the low down.

RADIOHEAD @ ROSELAND BALLROOM

We were lucky enough to attend the first of two surprise shows Radiohead performed at Roseland Ballroom in New York City this week. The band was in town for an appearance on the Colbert Report and rumor has it, they wanted to make the most of their trip and booked these two last minute shows, making many a Radiohead fan’s dreams come true. Why was it such a big deal? The last time we saw them was at Madison Square Garden (20k capacity arena vs. 3k capacity venue).

The show was nothing short of amazing, with Thom Yorke casually joking on stage, while reminding us how good a musician he is…the rest of the band sounded top notch as well. The band were joined by second drummer, Clive Deamer, who contributed seamlessly to the pulsating rhythms of the new material found on The King of Limbs. The band mostly played their new material, but also included in a few vintage gems in their set such as “Subterranean Homesick Alien”. See below for full set list.

For a full breakdown of the evenings activities head over to the New York Times Online to read Nate Chinen’s review. Also, be sure to check out Frank Mojica’s review of the same evening on Consequence of Sound.

20th Anniversary of NIRVANA NEVERMIND

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEVERMIND!

Nirvana Nevermind Cover

I remember like it was yesterday when I first heard Nirvana’s “Teen Spirit”. My mom was driving and Nirvana’s and the song came on WDRE (RIP – best Philadelphia rock station EVER). I was blown away by the power of the guitars and grit of the vocals. My mom hated it and changed the station, but was cool enough to let me change it back and listen to the entire song so I could hear the DJ announce the song at the end. That weekend I went to Sam Goody and bought the CD.

Sam Goody

I listened to Nevermind exclusively for about a month straight on my Sony Discman while riding the school bus to/from school and while doing just about anything else.

Sony Discman

Immediate favorites were “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (of course), “In Bloom”, “Lithium”, and “Drain You”. If I had to pick one it would probably be “Drain You”. It’s hard to believe it’s now been twenty years since this seminal album came out on Geffen Records (DGC), but easy to hear why these songs still stand. The recordings still capture the unmistakable force of Dave Grohl’s drums, and the hurt in Kurt’s voice.

To celebrate it’s anniversary, David Geffen Company has put together some amazing limited edition box sets featuring new never released material and some killer vinyl. Visit http://www.nirvana.com/store/ to learn more.

What’s your Nevermind story? Where were you when you heard Nirvana for the first time?

Thanks to Kurt, Dave, Krist, Butch Vig, and Andy Wallace for making an unbelievable record that shaped much of my rock n’ roll tastes.

Pitchfork gives new Cymbals Eat Guitars 8/10

Cymbals Eat Guitars’ new album, Lenses Alien, receives an 8.0 out of 10 on Pitchfork.

Produced by “1990s-throwback-indie producer du jour John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile)” (Pitchfork), the record was recorded at both Headgear Recording and Ooh La La’s studio in Brooklyn, NY. Ooh La La’s Theo Aronson lent a hand with some additional engineering on the record.

The band’s new album is available in the US through Barsuk Records and in the UK via Memphis Industries. Fans can purchase the new release from the band’s website: www.cymbalseatguitars.com/. Click the image below to purchase via Amazon.com.

Jane’s Addiction Live @ Terminal 5

On Monday night Jane’s Addiction, one of my all time favorite bands, played Terminal 5. This was their first NYC proper show in many years. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there because I was too busy rocking out to The Last Royals at Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn, but thanks to Brooklyn Vegan we can all quickly get an idea for what an awesome (FREE!!!!) show this was.

The free show was the “world’s first 3D user-generated concert event”. The concert itself wasn’t in 3-D, but it was being filmed (and streamed live on Youtube), and the footage is going to be turned into “one special 3D 60-minute documentary film which will be premiered on the LG Thrill 3D YouTube channel on August 4.” (Brooklyn Vegan)

Very cool…Jane’s are going to be touring select cities around the world over the next few months so let’s just hope they had so much fun on Monday night that they decide to come back one more time to promote the new album. On a funny side note, producer extraordinaire Dave Sitek (whose studio used to be next to mine) stepped in to help produce and play bass on the new record. THAT got me even more excited to hear what this new record is going to sound like…apparently they’re leaking the first single this week so we’ll know soon enough.

In the meantime, for full coverage, set list, videos and some killer photos by Dana “Distortion” Yavin visit Brooklyn Vegan.
