HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEVERMIND!

I remember like it was yesterday when I first heard Nirvana’s “Teen Spirit”. My mom was driving and Nirvana’s and the song came on WDRE (RIP – best Philadelphia rock station EVER). I was blown away by the power of the guitars and grit of the vocals. My mom hated it and changed the station, but was cool enough to let me change it back and listen to the entire song so I could hear the DJ announce the song at the end. That weekend I went to Sam Goody and bought the CD.
I listened to Nevermind exclusively for about a month straight on my Sony Discman while riding the school bus to/from school and while doing just about anything else.

Immediate favorites were “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (of course), “In Bloom”, “Lithium”, and “Drain You”. If I had to pick one it would probably be “Drain You”. It’s hard to believe it’s now been twenty years since this seminal album came out on Geffen Records (DGC), but easy to hear why these songs still stand. The recordings still capture the unmistakable force of Dave Grohl’s drums, and the hurt in Kurt’s voice.
To celebrate it’s anniversary, David Geffen Company has put together some amazing limited edition box sets featuring new never released material and some killer vinyl. Visit http://www.nirvana.com/store/ to learn more.
What’s your Nevermind story? Where were you when you heard Nirvana for the first time?
Thanks to Kurt, Dave, Krist, Butch Vig, and Andy Wallace for making an unbelievable record that shaped much of my rock n’ roll tastes.
