Portugal. The Man LIVE at Brooklyn Bowl

Friday night fans of Portugal. The Man packed Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg to enjoy a sold out show. This was our first time seeing Portugal The Man and we were definitely impressed! Though the band has been around for 5+ years now and their most recent release, American Ghetto, is actually their seventh album, it seems the hype only really started building in the last couple years. Like the The Black Keys, one can only imagine how many conversations this band has where people congratulate them on their “second album”, resulting in the band politely correcting the fan or interviewer and then informing them that they’ve actually released many more in their career. Take the hype for what it’s worth. In this case, PTM lived up to it!

The production of the show on Friday was simple, stripped down, and psychedelic. The stage consisted of the five members, each with their respective spaces to rock out in and the light show provided for a welcome trippy musical experience.

Lead singer and guitarist John Gourley stole most of the show with his endearing vocals and great guitar playing. The band paid tribute to many of their obvious 70s rock influences with a set that included covers such as The Beatles “Helter Skelter” and Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes” (penned by David Bowie in 1972). All in all it was a great show and we’re looking forward to seeing them again in the future. For additional photos, thoughts, and setlist check out According 2 G.
