Rest In Peace, Lou Reed

A legend passed away this weekend.

That the man behind such songs as “Waiting for the Man” and “Heroin” continued to produce work to the ripe age of 71 is almost as surprising as his abrupt passing. We’re big fans at Ooh La La and we’ve been both celebrating his life and mourning his death since we heard the news.

Unlike many of the young rock n’ roll legends who died young, Lou met his full potential and yet never ceased to experiment with new ideas, collaborations and mediums.

To say that his work with The Velvet Underground was influential would be a massive understatement. Lou was one of the pillars of what underground music has become, a veritable master of rock & roll.

You’ll be missed, Mr. Lou Reed.

What We’re Listening To: Cut Copy

We here at Ooh La La not only love bringing you the newest and best that the music world has to offer, but we also love it when other great labels do the same.  The fine people over at Loma Vista and Modular posted a new Cut Copy song yesterday, off their new album Free Your Mind, which comes out on November 5th, and we’re pretty excited.  This song is great, the video for the first single is great, and the rest of the album is just awesome.  Check both out for yourself:

I could try to describe the record, but maybe our friends at Flea Marketing said it best:

“You could call Cut Copy an electronica (even indietronica) band, and you’d be right. But you’d also be right if you called them Synth-pop (think Human League), new-wave (think Simple Minds) or even a neo-disco-downbeat-dance-explosion (think…well, nothing, because I just made that up). But you get the idea. It’s a blissfully catchy dance-making album full of enormous hooks and rabbit holes to fall down and get lost in. All-over-the-place can go horribly wrong. It didn’t here. It went fantastically right.”

We’ll be sure to keep you posted on all of the other great music that we stumbled upon too late to sign, but are happy to enjoy regardless!

Check out the Latest Wild Honey Pie Buzzsession

The Wild Honey Pie posted a new installment of their Buzzsession series yesterday, this time featuring legendary Glasgow indie poppers Camera Obscura.

The Wild Honey Pie is one of our favorite blogs not only because they have introduced us to some great new music but also because they continuously give back to the musical conversation by creating interesting original content. Eric and his team have gone above and beyond the role of new music critic, into the land of active participant in the current musical conversation.

Our very own Last Royals did a session a while back. Check out a clip from that here:

If you’re looking for a more sincere, down-to-earth to the likes of Pitchfork, consider The Wild Honey Pie your new go-to blog.

Twin Shadow X GTA V

What could be more fun than hijacking your favorite sports car and making mischief in the streets of Los Angeles?

Doing it while listening to Twin Shadow, of course.

The latest installment of Grand Theft Auto drops today, featuring many of our favorite up-and-coming artists on the radio in the cars you steal. In addition to DJing an entire station in-game, Twin Shadow contributed a brand new song to the GTA V soundtrack entitled “Old Love / New Love”. Check it out here!

Tyler the Creator, Flying Lotus Wavves and more are also featured in game. Awesome!

Ooh La La Artist Video Series #11

videoartistsseries

For the eleventh installment of our Artist Video Series, director Maia Stern pulls from the archives of her childhood to give us this nostalgiac vignette, set to Ace Reporter’s “Untouched and Arrived”.

Here’s what Maia had to say about the video:

I grew up with two older brothers and a dad who documented almost everything we did. This is some of my favorite footage my dad filmed one summer in Malibu, California. My eldest brother was surfing with a friend while I was digging in the sand and finding seaweed with a friend. I never understood why this footage came out with such a green tone, so I wanted to experiment with color filters for this video, to see what it would look like in other shades. I wanted to see the moon as blue and me in black an white rather than green. You can’t really change your memories if you have them documented in film, but you can change their colors.
